Metal Processes (61)You’re 18 years old and you never really cared for buckling up in the backseat. Big deal, right? It’s legal because of your age, isn’t it?
Not anymore.
House Bill 537 states that all occupants of a vehicle, no matter their age, are required to be secured by a safety belt, no matter where they are seated in a vehicle. According to Texas Department of Public Safety, the law went into effect in September 2009.
Click it or Ticket, a national advertising campaign by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, recently aired a commercial where the driver of a car is getting picked on by his buddy, who is in the backseat, because he got pulled over. But it turns out that the buddy in the backseat was the one who ended up getting the ticket for not being buckled.
That’s right, you will now get a ticket for not being buckled up. The fine for not buckling up in Irving is $153 (not counting court costs, etc.), according to irvingtexas.com.
The next time you're riding in the backseat, remind yourself that you are now able to get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. Buckle up, no matter your age or where you’re seated.
