Car crashes are the leading cause of death for adolescents, and most are caused by a combination of inexperience, and drinking. Add to that devices such as cell phones, lack of sleep, MP3 players, applying makeup, and eating and drinking and you have a recipe for disaster. So what is a parent to do?
Here are some tips to help your teens to make choices right hand drive, and stay out safely on the road.
1. Respect the local driving laws
It seems simple enough, but it is sad to say that most parents follow the "do as I say, not as I do" method of driving. You can not disobey road safety and traffic laws and do not expect your teen to do the same.
Rule: The rules are there for a reason. Security and nobody is above the law. Room and follow the rules of the road and wait for your teen to do the same!
2. Use of seat belts
Studies show that over 35% of teenagers do not wear seat belts when driving, and the number is higher when they are a passenger. Many people, not just teens rationalize that they are just a short distance, and they are safe not wearing one, but most accidents happen within 5 miles of your home.
Rule: The wearing of is not negotiable for everyone.
3. Using cell phone while driving
Explain to your teen that studies show that when people talk on a cell phone while driving their judgments may also be reduced if they are intoxicated. However, more than half of parents driving with children in the car or talking on the phone regularly while driving and your teen to see that. Texting while driving is another no, not that teenagers are guilty of.
Rule: Do not use a cell phone so ever when driving. Even using blue tooth phone takes your concentration on the road and night to driving ability.
4. Knowing the speed limit
Speeding: More than half of insured people admitted to driving 10-15 miles over the speed limit on a daily basis. Over 90% admit to not pay attention to speed limit signs. Speed kills, and adolescents with inexperienced driving skills underdeveloped lack the ability to stop or control a car when the speed quickly. Accidents are running higher among adolescents than any other age group to drive.
Rule: Be aware of the speed limit at all times
