Palo Alto police will be hunting down drivers who don't buckle up as part of this month's statewide "Click It or Ticket Campaign."
Police officers specifically assigned to look for seat belt scofflaws will be working overtime covered by a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant.
Palo Alto police Lt. Sandra Brown said the stepped-up enforcement will begin Monday and continue through the end of the month. The police department has about $1,000 remaining from the grant, she said.
According to police, 1,389 people who didn't wear seat belts died in vehicle crashes in California two years ago, and half of those deaths could have been prevented. Officers will particularly look out for teenagers because they are less likely to wear seat belts, police said.
A seat belt violation costs $142 and drivers can be fined up to $445 for not properly restraining a child under age 16, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
