State transportation officials say more North Carolina motorists used seat belts last year than the year before.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program said Tuesday seat belt use in the state climbed slightly from 89.5 percent to 89.7 percent last year. It beats the national rate of 83 percent.
“While this increase is not statistically significant, it is a positive sign that more people are buckling up,” said David Weinstein, director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.”
Results of the survey are compiled from observers.
Of last year’s 1,012 traffic-related deaths in the state, 431 were among motorists who were not using seat belts.
